Noise is an important problem in a modern society. To counter this problem, there are legal requirements to limit noise exposure, to abate noise nuisance and to include noise in environmental impact assessments. Good acoustic design is also important for the functioning and enjoyment of certain activities, for communication and for the general quality of life. Industry must therefore take noise into account in the their design and operational processes to design noise out of their activities. The strongest needs are in the acoustics of the outdoor and built environments, where often the propagation of sound involves many diverse complex paths. To help the industries and other interested groups to tackle related noise problems and develop materials for noise control, we propose to pool our research expertise and to seek greater involvement with these parties. Through joint meetings and seminars with building, building materials and noise control equipment manufacturers, we aim to promote industrial awareness of current research in acoustics, provide more direct channels for technology transfer and lead the development of acoustic strategies into industrial processes. These interchanges will improve our awareness of industrial needs and enable closer collaboration between network members to produce more industrial relevant and cost-effective acoustic research
