Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal seeks support for the development of a WWW remote-access laboratory to support the open access / asynchronous learning model of the MSc in Electronics and Software Systems. The course is a collaborative programme between three higher education institutions, with delivery based on a combination of internet and video-conferencing based techniques. The proposed three year project aims to substantially enhance the teaching and learning environment by developing a remote experimentation laboratory facility, initially for a module on Embedded Systems. The successful completion of the project will afford distance learning students the opportunity to perform experiments, which cannot be adequately experienced using simulation, with no restrictions on geographical location or access time. On completion of the project, students on the course will be able to access the remote laboratory to evaluate prototype hardware and software constructs. The proposal thus seeks to utilise the benefits afforded by the WWW in the development of a virtual embedded systems laboratory .
