Summary on Grant Application Form
This MTP will enhance the delivery of an existing M.Sc. course in Physics of Laser Communications andassist the development of a new M.Sc. in Photonics (planned for launch in 2001). The training includes:(1) formal tuition in fundamentals of optical and optoelectronic systems and components,(2) constantly updated short Workshop courses with speakers drawn from leading-edge academic and industrial laboratories,(3) four-month projects based at relevant UK industrial and European academic sites, and(4) development of distance-learning packages in relevant aspects of photonic technology. For the 5-year period of EPSRC funding the objectives are (1) target figures of 15-20 FTE students eachyear on each course/ (2) 70 % of graduates entering the photonics employment sector, (3) wide attendanceby part-time students from industry at course modules and short Workshop Courses, and (4) a range ofWeb-based courses available to art-time and distance learners.
