To examine:(i) methods for reducing eigenproblems for ODE block matrix operators to eigenproblems for ODE systems;(ii) the best formulations for such systems for finding eigenvalues (eg possible favourable changes of variable based on special structure inherited from the block operator);(iii) the location of the essential spectrum of block matrix operators. The work under (ii) will be complemented by work undertaken by the proposer to compare ODE-based methods with, eg variational methods, assuming that the location of the essential spectrum allows such methods to be used.
