Summary on Grant Application Form
Existing work on predicting burst rates will be reviewed in conjunction with (Ref). Data from participating water companies will be accessed. A key activity in data gathering will be to ensure comparability across companies through applying common reporting definitions. An initial model will employ Markov chain methods to link condition and serviceability, building on the Dynamic Asset Condition Model approach. This model will predict burst rates of individual sections of main using only data relating to that section. The second stage of modeling will concentrate on allowing for spatial effects, drawing information from neighboring sections. This will result in a spatial smoothing of estimates across a network that will smooth out local data fluctuations to produce more realistic burst rate estimates.Further work will incorporate considerations of water quality within these tools. All methods will be tested thoroughly using real data from participating companies. An important component of the work will be to distill the statistical methodology into a decision-support tool for practising engineers, to guide investment and asset management decisions.
