Summary on Grant Application Form
The study of the surfaces of quasicrystals is in its infancy, because single grains large enough for analysis using conventional surface science techniques have only recently become available. The UK has a large and active surface science community, yet there has been very little work on quasicrystal surfaces in the UK. This proposed network brings together the complimentary expertise of several leading UK surface science groups to take a comprehensive approach to the fundamental surface science of these materials. The accumulation of expertise and equipment will enable us to quickly gain an international presence in this field. The overall goals of the project are to advance the characterisation of the surface properties of quasicrystals with a view to possible applications and to foster interest in the field with a view to developing the UK presence on the international stage. To this end the Network is intended to be open to other UK groups who express a wish to participate after the initial setting-up period.
