Summary on Grant Application Form
The application of the air-riding seal technology to large-diameter gas turbines has the potential to offer very significant performance, weight and maintenance benefits. However, due to a lack of understanding of the dynamic behaviour, experimental development programmes have not been successful so far. Available evidence indicates that large axial and radial deformations, seal vibration, thermal expansion, unsteady turbulent high-speed flows through the seal, viscous heat generation in the air gap, debris and wear give rise to interacting aerothermoelasticity phenomena which are perceived to be too complex to be studied with current theoretical tools. However, previous experience gained from studying blade aeroelasticity suggests that it would be feasible to formulate a large-scale numerical model for air-riding seal aerothermoelasticity, the main aim of this proposal. A further objective is to assess the suitability of such detailed numerical models for conducting virtual experiments either to obtain design data, or to explain failure modes.EngProg\
