|
One of the main challenges to the success of total hip and knee replacements is the problem of long term aseptic loosening. From discussions over the past year with various groups in the UK and abroad we have found that a basic disagreement exists as to whether wear in the artificial SHOULDER is a problem. However, documented evidence supporting either side of the discussion is scarce.This project will include three approached to the problem: 1) a retrieval study in which the degree of wear is measured and correlated with parameters including prosthetic design, surgical technique and shoulder pathology 2) a finite-element study comparing predicted wear related stresses to the wear patterns, wear mechanisms and polythylene deformation observed in the retrieval study 3) designing wear simulator it is possible to accurately control the experiment, thereby facilitating the identification of the key parameters affecting wear.
