Summary on Grant Application Form
We recently demonstrated the fabrication of a 2D nonlinear photonic crystal in lithium niobate. This new micro-structured material (HEXLN) is a higher dimensional analogue of the familiar 1D quasi-phase material periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The additional dimensionality opens up the possibility of efficient phase-matching of non co-linear interactions, and the possibility of simultaneous phase-matching of a number of nonlinear processes. We propose to study the fundamental properties of these new materials and advance the fabrication processes to encompass more complex patterning, and patterned planar waveguides structures. Finally, we shall investigate various laser, communications and switching applications of the technology.
