Summary on Grant Application Form
To develop a proof-of-principle demonstrator of a novel approach to spectral analysis and gas detection. The instrument is based on a single interference filter and uses Rochon prisms to pass orthogonally polarised components of a light beam to through the filter at differing angles. The effective pass-band for the two polarisations is shifted and any difference in spectral power is manifest as an intensity imbalance. For healthcare applications a violet laser diode will excite PpIX fluorescence, an indicator to cancerous tissue, and detectable by the differential signal between 600 and 630nm. The goal is to achieve an optical biopsy for the rapid identification of cancerous tissue.
