The numerical solution of hyperbolic conservation laws is of vital importance in many areas of applied science; namely fluid mechanics and electromagnet ics. Typically, solutions to these partial differential equations exhibit localised phenomena such as propagating shocks and sharp transition layers, and their numerical solution presents a very challenging computational task. The key objective of this project is to address the issue of solution quality; namely, how accurate is the numerical solution and how can the most accurate solution be attained for a fixed computational resource? To this end, the aim of the proposed research is to develop a comprehensive mathematical theory of a posteriori error estimation for general finite element methods which incorporate both local mesh refinement together with local polynomial enrichment. These error estimates will be implemented into adaptive finite element software to ensure error control to within a user-defined tolerance is achieved through a feedback process.
