|
Funding is sought to strengthen a current unique 2 year pert-time MSc course in Clinical Engineering. The first intake was in September 1998. There are currently 8 students in the first year and 9 students in the second year. Accreditation is being sought from the Institute of Physics and Engineering Medicine (IPEM) and this will considerably increase the appeal of the course to prospective students in the clinical engineering field. When accreditation is given this will be the only MSc qualification designed specifically for clinical engineers to enable them to obtain the protected title of Clinical Scientist. As the course becomes more established it is expected that employers will be more ready to give financial support to potential applicants. It is anticipated that this will occur over the next four years. However, in the meantime a majority of prospective students will be at a particular stage in their careers where they will have difficulty in financing themselves on the course. Therefore 60 studentships are requested in order to underpin the course over the next four years. In addition, there is a considerable element of distance learning which is currently provided in printed form through the mail system. Building on the expertise already available in the Cardiff School of Engineering, funding is sought to transfer current distance learning practices to the World Wide Web which would enable a more efficient delivery of the course and improved learning outcomes for students.
