Summary on Grant Application Form
In systems built from off the shelf components, diversity (software fault tolerance) helps to achieve satisfactory dependability at acceptable cost.We will produce:1. Mathematical help for the evaluator (customer or regulator) of such systems, especially to deal with: the disparate evidence of reliability available for different components: the limited value of experience from past usage of components for predicting their reliability in a new system.2. Advice for the designer for choosing and integrating off the shelf components into a diverse system. We will scrutinise the bases of current practice by probabilistic modelling, definition of empirical tests for its implicit assumptions, and cheap experiments to measure actual diversity and the validity of the above assumptions in some actual COTS components.
