The aim is to investigate a novel method, termed centrifugal spinning, for producing fibres from thermoplastic. The principle involves radial forces rapidly attenuating small quantities of molten polymer into fine liquid streams, and cooling these with air-currents to form fibres/filaments. Current research attempts to process the waste in an identical manner to the virgin polymer. The results give degraded fibre properties. Immiscibility and melt rheology of blends, and thermal degradation of the recyclate are key problems. Rapidly converting small quantities of the polymer into fibres is a feasible solution via the centrifugal spinning method. The proposed work involves building an experimental rig and studying the dynamics of the process and the resulting fibre mechanical properties.
