Porous monolith polymers possess numerous advantages over more traditional porous polymer beads. Nevertheless, the synthesis of these materials requires large volumes of organic solvents and the precise control of pore size can be complicated. We intend to develop simple, 'solvent free' methods for the synthesis of porous polymer monoliths using CO2 as the porogen. The research will identify methods for the production of porous materials with well-defined pore sizes and pore size distributions. These methods will then be extended to the synthesis of porous polymers with useful chemical functionalities. We expect these materials to be useful in a range of applications including separation science and polymer supported synthesis.
