Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will investigate the application of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) to the direct prediction of stall in axial flow compressors. An existing code will be adapted to compute unsteady flow in multiple blade rows and parallelised for execution on workstation clusters using Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) software. The performance of the code in capturing stall related data for a low-speed single stage compressor will be assessed. The scope of the investigation will encompass the stall inception process, the characteristics of fully developed stall and the unstalling process. Further numerical investigations will be carried out seeking insight into the influence of flow and stage geometry on the development of compressor instability.
