Summary on Grant Application Form
If commercial organisations are to have confidence in the use of multi-agent systems for automating the exchange goods and services, it is essential that their development is grounded on well-understood theory. One promising avenue to the specification of agent societies is the use of normative logics, and specifically theories of legal position. The idea is for an agent to explicitly model and reason about its normative (or legal) position, with respect to its activities, so that it may act in accordance with that position or act to change it. In studying change in an agents position with respect to some activity, it is essential to investigate agent communication. For instance, the performance of a commissive or permissive communicative act could change the position of either the actor or another agent. The model developed in this work will be used in the implementation of a multi-agent system for automating trade between multiple organisations; this implementation will be used to evaluate the model.
