The proposed research network uses a focal self-regulating feedback control system. Daisyworld, as a launch platform for considering self-regulation in any complex system with multiple feedback loops. The network will bring together scientists from a diversity of fields with a common interest in Daisyworld and systems theory. Natural scientists will share knowledge with mathematicians, systems theorists and telecommunications researchers. Three workshops will be held with collaborative meetings in-between them. In the first phase, work inspired by Daisyworld will be synthesised with established systems theory, focusing on the nature of the control systems and its mathematical description. In the second phase the range of feedback control systems will be reviewed, and a general summary including mathematical theory of feedback control produced. In the final phase, outstanding feedback control questions and problems will be identified and new model systems designed to help answer these. Applications in telecommunications and computer systems including the internet will be assessed, with the involvement of BT. The output of the network will be disseminated via a website, review article and research papers. The knowledge gained will be shared with interested students, other networks and members of the broader scientific community.
