Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is to identify materials which could be used as alternatives to the perovskite/fluorite type oxides in ion conducting applications. It is believed that the K2NiF4 type oxides may provide these alternatives. In determining the suitability of these oxides many factors have to be considered and this proposal will address the issue of thermal stability in combination with ionic conductivity. The approach will be to apply in situ high temperature characterisation techniques to a variety of K2NiF4 type oxides allowing identification of those most stable at elevated temperatures. Having achieved this the candidate compounds which are of most interest will be subjected to further testing to determine the conductivity of the oxide and whether it is an ionic conductor or a mixed ionic-electronic conductor (MIEC). This will then determine the most suitable application for the material. Ionic conducting oxides will be tested as possible electrolytes in SOFCs whereas the mixed ionic electronic conducting oxides would be tested as cathodes for SOFCs or membranes for oxygen generators.
