Summary on Grant Application Form
Elastomers are of strategic importance in many engineering applications. Their mechanical behaviour is strongly dependent on filler loading and type and can be highly non-linear. No existing model fully describes the rate dependent behaviour of filled natural rubber (NR) across a wide range of rates and temperatures; a model (RTS) in which the damping element can be described by non-linear diffusion does, however, show promise in that it can give stiffnesses which are highly dependent on strain, weak rate dependence and stress which relaxes approximately linearly with logarithmic time.In the project a reference set of mechanical data for NR, EPDM and silicone elastomers filled with carbon black and silica will be obtained for a wide range of rates and temperatures. Tests will include sinusoidal and dual sine experiments as well as stress relaxation. Thorough harmonic analysis will be an important aspect of the work.Models will be developed as appropriate then filled to and compared with the reference data. The success or otherwise of the various models in predicting the behaviour of filled elastomers will be assessed, as will technological implications of the work with regard to suitability of various possible elastomer-filled combinations.
