Recently we developed a novel method of producing ultrafine powders of strongly magnetic materials using sulfate-reducing bacteria. In this project we plan to study magnetic properties of iron sulphide nanoparticles and how these properties depend on size, structure and fabrication methods. We will perform measurements of magnetic hysteresis for different cooling/heating procedures. Such studies will enable us to estimate the energy barriers and magnetic anisotropy constant. Our further plans include investigations of magnetic relaxation. The results obtained will be compared with the predictions of the Brown-Neel theory. We also plan to study quantum tunnelling of the magnetisation at low temperature.
