Although background academic research indicates that Terfenol 'D' may be suitable for this application, sources must first be designed and manufactured by the University so that their performance can be tested along with seismic receivers in the relatively benign environment that coiled tubing drilling provides. The sources and seismic receivers will then be integrated into a research-based coiled tubing umbilical which will provide power, bidirectional communication and cooling systems between surface and downhole equipment. A coiled tubing drilling unit (CTU) will then be employed from the back of a vessel, or on a land unit, to drill two disposable probe holes about 1,000m deep. Each probe is to contain a vertical array of polarisable seismic sources as well as an array of three-component geophones. The sources in each probe will be fired sequentially, while the responses at all the receivers are recorded. The earth beneath these probes is mapped using the w ell-known principles of vertical arrays. The imaging software uses the background seismic velocity structure already known from conventional seismic surveys and the vector particle motion from the three-component geophones to locate the reflectors. A high resolution seismic map is then produced between the two seismic arrays.
