Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to polymerise a range of alkynes in zeolites and in mesoporous particles and thus to achieve within the porous, constraining environment, a collection of chain-extended conjugated polymers, wither single(zeolite) or multi-chain (mesopore). These encapsulated polymers, will be held (inside theparticeles) in suspension in an electric field. The zeolite/mesopore particles are unoriented, transparent, and eletronically inert. Recent transient photoconductivity techniques, developed to measure photocurrents on polymers in solution, will be used with subnanosecond temporal resolution to establish microscopic electronic transport properties of the extended isolate polymers, - such as carrier range and mobility. As an archetypal example of such polymers, polyacetylene will be sued initially. Other conjugated polymers and polymer mixes, will be characterised as grown in mesopores, and their electronic transport properties measured. The technique allows control over chain-chain interactions, and the effect of this parameter on transport will be studied.
