Summary on Grant Application Form
A promising new approach to modelling damage will be evaluated as a method for predicting notched tensile strength of composite laminates. The approach is based on modelling the plies with separate planar elements connected together with interface elements to represent delamination. It will be extended to include fibre failure, and applied to predicting the effects of notch size, geometry, ply thickness and stacking sequence on tensile strength. Damage development will be studied experimentally for a range of notched laminates. The potential of the approach will be assessed by correlating predicted and measured damage and tensile strengths.EngProg\
