Yoghurt and some underarm deodorants have something in common. They are both composed of amorphous networks of particles. Neither is at equilibrium, neither is crystalline and both have solid-like mechanical properties because of the network. Glassy materials, eg window glass, are also not at equilibrium, not crystalline and have solid-like mechanical properties. The proposed research will attempt to answer the question: Are gels simply low density glasses? Or, slightly more specifically, as we look at denser and denser gels do they resemble glasses more and more, without there being any discontinuity in the properties of the gels/glasses. The research will apply existing, well-developed techniques used in the study of glasses to gels, which are much less understood than glasses.
