Recently we have prepared a series of nickel- and palladium-containing cages which show interesting interactions with anions. The most remarkable aspect of these structures is that they can only be prepared in the presence of a selected anion. These reactions are among the very few examples of anion-templated self-assembly. In this proposal, we aim to fully understand the templating effect of anions and be able to use them as a general methodology for the synthesis of designed supermolecules. In order to do this, the project will first concentrate on fully understanding the systems that have already been prepared. Studies in solution will be undertaken. The effects of changing the templating anion will also be examined. In the second stage, a series of new simple ligands (used as building blocks to prepare the cages) will be synthesised. These ligands will allow to change properties of the metallo-cages such as size, charge and chirality. Properties of the cages will also be modified by changing the metal centres. In the final stage, the possibility of using these systems as anion receptors will be explored. A long term target is the synthesis of molecular wires and nonotubes based on these cages and boxes.
