We have recently developed a facility for simultaneous time-resolved small-angle x-ray scattering/rheology experiments on sheared soft solids such as copolymer and surfactant gels and liquid crystal polymers. This instrument has been exploited successfully in a series of experiments at the SRS. We will now develop the instrument to enable an exciting range of combined structure/rheology experiments on soft solids under deformation conditions. This will substantially develop the capabilities of this world-leading instrument. First, a gonimeter will be developed for in situ x-ray crystallography on pre-sheared gel and paste-like soft solids such as cubic micellar phases in amphiphile solutions and block copolymer mesophases. Second, the instrument will be extended by the purchase of new shear tools to enable simulaneous x-ray scattering and rheology experiments on films, fibres and bars. Finally, the rheometer will be modified to enable wide-angle x-ray scattering experiments (using a CCD detector), for a range of sample geometries (sandwich, film, fibre or bar). SAXS/WAXS on semicrystalline polymers such as polyethylene and polyproplene will be used to deconvolute the response of crystalline and amorous components to an applied deformation.
