Summary on Grant Application Form
The modifications to an extreme but localised wave group as it advances inshore are more relevant for the prediction of sea defence overtopping and lee shore flooding than the behaviour of regular waves. It is likely that small changes to the incident wave group will affect the surface set-up and wave height and have a significant effect on coastal flooding. Extreme focused wave groups will be generated in the UK Coastal Research Facility (UKCRF) and their interaction with a plane beach and a sloping seawall will be investigated. The UKCRF wave generator will thus be enhanced so that repeatable extreme unidirectional and spread shallow water waves can be generated. Measurements will be taken of free surface profiles of focused wave groups, water particle kinematics in the surf-zone, and the post-overtopped flows in a drainage channel leeward of the sloping sea wall. Numerical predictions using adaptive Q-tree VOF and NLSW solvers will be compared with the UKCRF measurements. The project will lead to an improved fundamental understanding of extreme wave transformation and overtopping at impermeable coastal defences with resulting flooding.EngProg\
