The wave-shift effect has been established in the 70s. At that time its control was both impractical and unnecessary for grinding with and dressing of conventional wheels. Now for super-abrasive wheels and rotary dressing the knowledge of the wave-shift mechanism can be employed to reduce the effect of an inevitable run-out of super-abrasive wheels. At the same time the advances in motor drive design have made this process possible.The accurate synchronisation of the wheel - work movement is not available on current machines. Yet the indications are that this synchronisation, in conjunction with optimum strategies, which take into account machine dynamics and system resonances, can result in significant improvements of wheel life and surface quality. The knowledge of the process and the ability of accurate control could provide a powerful tool for dealing with vibration problems, significant competitive edge for machine manufacturers and improved consistency and quality for the users.
