This proposal is for platform funding to underpin, provide staffing continuity and allow new fundamental research directions to be pursued for two related strands of research at the Bartlett, UCL. The first strand is the research funded under the Foresight Challenge Award 'VR Centre for the Built Environment'. The second strand is the programme of 'space syntax' research originally set up through a series of SERC/EPSRC projects some 20 years ago, and now funded by industry through live applications research projects. Both strands are applications led, with strong industry support, and are the focus of international research networks, however both are dependent on fundamental research in software development and an empirical understanding of the way the built environment is configured and functions. This bid is to provide the next generation of methodology, fundamental understanding and the international research collaborations needed to underpin that research. In particular the research will develop new methods for the representation of spatial patterns in the built environment based on continuous rather than discrete maths. It will also develop methods for simulation of behaviour amongst discrete perception based agents within spatial environments. A meta-dataset of pedestrian behaviour data will be compiled from recent industry funded projects.EngProg\
