Summary on Grant Application Form
This collaborative research project aims to investigate the feasibility of a radically new approach to the Internet-based sourcing of engineering components. The proposal envisages the following scenario: a designer having created a 3D CAD model of a prototype part uploads it into an Internet search engine and asks the question Has anyone else in the world produced a similar part before? To answer this question the applicants believe that research is required into algorithms for assessing the geometric similarity of 3D models. The proposal describes a phased research project that aims to establish if similarity matching can be used to create an effective tool for source mechanical components.
