The work is driven by the need to intensify gas separation plant for Oil & Gas extraction applications. Cyclonic separators have inherent advantages for separation of very fine droplets. The principal barrier to their implementation is the combination of a narrow operating range in respect to inlet drop size distribution, relatively low turn-down ratios and a lack of fundamental work to permit sufficient certainty in design to allow performance guarantees.This work will provide an experimental facility at Sheffield and promote a joint approach to modelling work at both Sheffield and UMIST to generate fundamental understanding of the limits of performance of range of axi-flow cyclones of potential interest in gas liquid s separation applications. The work will focus on individual cyclone elements as well as overall separator design and will culminate in an industrial trial of a prototype designed on the basis of the test and modelling results.
