Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to study the spectral behaviour of the Neumann Laplacian on domains which belong to a wide class of irregular domains (GRD) introduced in [5, 7]. In [10] the PI and the proposed VF established connections between the essential spectra of the Neumann Laplacian ?? on a domain ? and that of a Sturm-Liouville-type operator H? defined on an associated tree ?. The research will initially concentrate on improving estimates in [6] for the approximation numbers of a Sobolev embedding using recent results on Hardy operators on trees. Using this knowledge, connections between the counting functions of ?? and H? will be investigated and the possibility of exotic asymptotic behaviour studied.
