Summary on Grant Application Form
A direct numerical simulation (DNS) and modelling study is proposed to improve predictions of suddenly perturbed turbulent boundary layers. Two perturbations will be considered, the first induced by an adverse pressure gradient (APG), the second by sudden removal of the APG. The focus will be upon the response of the turbulence during the periods immediately after each perturbation. The performance of current Reynolds-averaged turbulence models will be investigated by comparing predictions with DNS results from time-developing strained-channel flow. The strained-channel geometry has the advantage of creating a flow in which the turbulence is subjected to the mean-flow evolution found in relevant spatially developing APG and relaxing boundary layers, while producing Reynolds-averaged statistics governed by an unsteady one-dimensional problem. As a result a wide range of turbulence models can be rapidly evaluated. The model/DNS comparisons are expected to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of current models, and to reveal promising new avenues for future model development.
