The aim of the project is to devise handling and post-processing techniques for photonic crystal fibres (PCFs).The PCF is a revolutionary new type of optical fibre, in which light is confined within an array of air holes that run along the length of the fibre. PCFs have a wide range of useful properties that are distinct from those of conventional fibres. However, PCFs can only find applications if techniques are found to handle and process them, like the well-known techniques applied to conventional fibres. Many of these techniques are not applicable, or are not trivial to apply, to PCFs.We propose to remedy this shortfall through an experimental research programme, supported by modelling work, to develop low-loss processing techniques for PCFs and make doped PCFs. We would then implement simple devices to demonstrate the potential of the PCF in real applications.
