In this 30 month programme it is suggested to develop new high average power diode pumped picosecond laser systems operating at one micron for three specific applications. The applications are:a) the production of EUV light for photo-lithographyb) the production of mid-infra red light for defence, andc) a photo-injector system for an electron/positron accelerator system. The laser development follows from results obtained in passive modelocking using semiconductor saturable absorbers. It is proposed to first build a high power modelocked oscillator (>100W) suitable for the defence application. The laser head developed and the experienced gained with this system is then used to develop and build a generative amplifier system in a ring configuration suitable for the production of pulses 30ps to several ns and output powers of over 100W. This system has an application in the production of EUV light. After that special modes of operation will be investigated for the photo-injector application, to produce a burst of intensity stabilised bursts of short pulses. The development focuses on using Nd:YAG and Nd:YALO materials. With the Nd:YAG material new configurations will be developed that utilise the depolarisation that occurs in this material. The work will involve collaborations with the beneficiaries.
