Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal aims to exploit the secondary acoustic emissions produced by shock-tissue interaction during ESWL kidney stone treatment in order to:1. Confirm accurate targetting of the lithotriptor on the kidney stone by monitoring the magnitude of the reflection of the primary ESWL pulse from the stone.2. Detect stone shattering via changes in the spectral content of the primary reflection.3. Detect shock-induced cavitation, and distinguish between cavitation close to the stone surface and cavitation in more remote tissue.Measurements of in-vitro and in-vivo emissions will be made, plus numerical simulations. The components of the acoustic signature will be identified by arrival time and spectral content. The resulting knowledge will be combined to develop key components of a diagnostic instrument. Ultimately, the instrument would allow a clinician to administer the minimum ESWL dose necessary to achieve the desired therapeutic effect, thus minimising tissue damage.EngProg\
