The proposed programme will combine UV- and Laser-LIGA techniques with deep silicon etching to realise a range of axial-flow fans and turbines based on magnetic micromotors with integral propellers. It is envisaged that the rotors in these devices will be some 300-500 micrometres in height with outer diameters of several mm. The idea is to produce devices that can operate a higher flow rates and lower pressure heads than existing microfluidic components. The scale is such that magnetic forces can compete with electrostatic, unlike in smaller devices.In addition to developing a new range of microengineered devices, we will build on recent work at HWU in the area of micro-bearings. In particular, we will investigate the use of microspheres or micro-projections to reduce the coefficient of friction in plain bearings made from electroformable and silicon-based materials.The devices realised will be geared towards cooling and air-speed sensing applications, in line with the interests of the industrial partners. However, the work will address key issues relating to microturbines and micromotors in general (e.g. friction ) and will thus also contribute to the development of other types of microactuator.
