We have recently shown that the asymmetric phase-transfer catalysed alkylation of glycine imines can be an effective method for the synthesis of amino acid derivatives. Here we propose to expand the range of electrophiles thAt can be used, enabling access to a wide range of structurally diverse alpha-amino acids. We also aim to investigate application of this chemistry in the synthesis of a number of key biologically-active molecules of varying complexity. This will enable us to address strategic issues associated with the construction of such target structures as well as providing efficient access to these important materials.
