Summary on Grant Application Form
Software scaffolding has been successfully employed within educational technology to help bridge the recognition-production gap between what learners want to be able to achieve and what they are able to effect themselves without assistance. This work has concentrated on scaffolding the learner at the domain level with less attention to the potential for providing explicit support at the metacognitive level. Evidence from previous research into learners' use of scaffolding assistance has indicated that less able and knowledgeable learners are ineffective at selecting appropriately challenging tasks and seeking appropriate qualities and quantities of support and guidance. The proposed research will develop and extend an existing prototype Interactive Learning Environment through the implementation of scaffolding at both the domain and metacognitive levels. Learners will be given feedback and guidance about the extent to which they are choosing activities above what they can currently achieve independently and the effectiveness of their use of the collaborative capabilities of the system. The system: JAMeS (Jointly Adaptive Metacognitive Scaffolding) will be developed in collaboration with educational practitioners and software designers and will be evaluated within a collaborating school.
