Summary on Grant Application Form
Even if the phrase is sometimes over used ' Images are worth a thousand words ',If the images are exciting and have an artistic merit in their own right then they can be used to pull people in to reading and understanding the material that led to the image. A set of good images associated with very carefully crafted explanatory text is one of the best and most general ways to convey the excitement and achievement of modern scientific research. An example of what can be achieved by high quality images and associated text can be seen in the book ' On the surface of things ' by Whitesides and Frenkel or on the web sites, http://web.mit.edu/edgerton/frlice/felice.html & http://web.mit.edu/feliceF/www/aps1.html which show examples of the ' Envisioning Science Exhibition ' created by Felice Frenkel. The aim of this project will be to produce a series of images and explanations of current EPSRC research of equivalent standing to the USA exhibition. In collaboration with the Southampton University Gallery (John Hansard Gallery) the images and text will be displayed as a travelling exhibition in schools, libraries and other public places as well as being available on the web.
