Drs Crewe and Daniell propose a web-based project to promote understanding of the value and process of their research in earthquake engineering amongst 11-16 year olds. To communicate their message effectively, they will work in partnership with Professor Sutherland, an educationalist currently researching how young people interact with screen technology. An interactive website will be developed as a learning resource. It will describe the effects of earthquakes on communities, the need for research to improve the earthquake resistance of structures, and fundamentals of the seismic behaviour and design of earthquake resistant buildings. Also, the website will provide details of a national competition for secondary schools, requiring the design and construction of a model of an earthquake resistant building. The best models produced by the young people will be tested on the EPSRC earthquake simulator at the University of Bristol's Earthquake Engineering Research Centre. In developing and testing ideas for the model, the process of earthquake engineering research will be simulated. The project will evolve through three stages: the simultaneous development of the website and the competition specification, the trial of the project in local schools, and the implementation of the website and the annual national competition. The website and competition will be publicised through appropriate media, targeting technology teachers. National media coverage of the first competition finals will publicise the event and increase general public awareness of earthquake engineering research and its benefits to society.
