Summary on Grant Application Form
Total loss or organ failure represents one of the most costly and devastating ailment currently faced by man.The aim of this project will be to design, build and test a device that is able to deliver a range of mechanical cues to a cell seeded collagen substrate. These mechanical cues will direct and control the formation of freshly synthesised collagen and the biochemical activity of the cells residing within the tubular tissue engineered construct. The orientation of the resident cells and freshly synthesised collagen (ultrastructure) of the tissue engineered construct will be visualised by a combination of light and scanning/transmission electron microscopy. The strength of the tissue engineered construct will be determined by mechanical testing. The freshly synthesised collagen will be assessed by the rates of Tritiated proline incorporation and PAGE/fluorgraphy. The ultimate aim of the project will be to have tissue engineered a blood vessel with enough supporting data to enable pre-clinical assessments to be carried out.EngProg\
