The aim of the programme is to study the methods used for the fabrication of elongated grain oxide and non-oxide structures for use as crack arresting interlayers in multilayer ceramic laminates. To do this it is proposed to spend 4 months working in the laboratories of Professors Harmer and Chan at the University of Lehigh. This will allow a study of the relative advantages of the two types of structure under different conditions, but in particular thermal shock where the crack driving force can greatly exceed the fracture energy of ceramic materials. Some time will also be spent at the laboratories of other workers. These will include Professor Padture at The University of Connecticut learning about his work on layered silicon carbide structures, Professor Kriven at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign learning about the fabrication of transformable interface and Professor Lawn at NIST.
