Summary on Grant Application Form
In recent years there has been considerable renewed interest in indirect microscopy which aims to recover very high resolution crystal structures via specimen exit surface wavefunctions reconstructed free of lens aberrations. One such method developed by the applicants involves the use of a data set of tilt azimuth images which can be reconstructed to higher resolution than available in the conventional axial image. This proposal is to appoint two research students to work on the (i) application of super resolved imaging to a range of chemically and industrially important materials, particularly those based on nano-cyrstalline forms where the location of the anion lattice is of primary importance to their function and (ii) to further refine and develop the technique. The research students will enhance the existing groups of AIK and WOS which are dedicated to the development of new quantitative microscopies and related techniques. The students will form an interface between those developing new methods and the potential beneficiaries within materials science and chemistry.
