Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will develop and analyse realistic mathematical models of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) which describe interactions between the expansive force created by tumour cell proliferation within the ducts and the stress that develops in the compliant ductal wall. The models, whose formulation will involve coupling of tumour growth models with those describing the mechanical response of the ductal wall, will establish whether correlations exist between the morphology, size and malignant potential of different forms of DCIS, and how its progression is affected by tumour cell-derived proteases that alter the mechanical properties of the ductal walls.
