Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this investigation is to test the validity of current mid-latitude trough models and to improve them in a physically realistic manner. This will be achieved firstly by measuring in Leicester the directions of arrival, times of flight and strength of signals radiated from a dedicated, frequency agile transmitter located in southern Sweden. Secondly, the measurements will be compared with ray-tracing simulations through various model ionospheres (e.g. those resulting from the recently completed COST programmes) and the models refined to obtain good agreement with the experimental data. The experiment will be conducted over a period of a year to provide observations covering all seasons, times of day, geomagnetic activity, etc.
