The aim of this project is to develop combinatorial-type methodology for the discovery of new olefin polymerisation catalysts based on triazacycle-imido and related systems. In preliminary experiments, examples of such compounds tested for ethylene polymerisation (under industrially relevant conditions) exhibited very high activity (in one instance better than the best commercially applied EPDM catalyst). The triazacycle-imido compounds to be studied are otherwise virtually undeveloped with regards to polyolefin synthesis.We shall develop and characterise a diverse library of solid-phase-supported triazacyclic ligands, and from these prepare a series of transition metal and other procatalysts for the polymerisation of ethylene using methods suitable for automated synthesis. We will also develop a library of supported metal complexes and subsequently introduce triazacyclic and other ancillary ligands giving an alternative library of procatalysts. A detailed assessment of the polymerisation characteristics of the solid-supported procatalysts will be undertaken, and solution phase syntheses and studies of compounds providing the most promising leads will be carried out.A significant strength of this project is that it brings together the complimentary efforts of groups with expertise in: (i) synthetic inorganic/ organometallic chemistry, (ii) combinatorial and related chemistry, (iii) industrial polyolefin production, (iv) computational chemistry, library design and database management.
