Summary on Grant Application Form
The characteristics of two-phase flow in small diameter channels differ from those in tubes with larger inner diameters and may affect the boiling heat transfer due to the relative increase in the significance of surface tension and capillary action in such small passages. This idfference can be of critical importance in several applications, where boiling or phase change occur. The results from past studies cannot give a clear conclusion on the effects of confinement although the reported results showed obvious differences from the ones obtained with conventional tubes (dh>8mm). No general flow pattern map or boundary relationship has been reported. A systematic study to clarify the effects of confinement on two-phase flow patterns, fluid dynamics, boiling heat transfer process and pressure drop is proposed here. The current expeirmental facility will be extended with the design of these new test sections and the effects of parameters such as diameter, pressure, mass flow rate and heat flux will be examined. All measuring equipment were carefully considered to allow highly accurate measurements to be performed.
