Computer simulations will be used to study the effects of introducing attractions between suspended disc-like colloidal particles. The aim is to model the structure, phase behaviour and aggregation behaviour of clay suspensions in which non-adsorbing polymer chains are dissolved, resulting in depletion attractions between the clay platelets. Using the Brownian Dynamics technique, the dynamics of these particles and the aggregation process will be studied. The work is of relevance for understanding the gel formation in clay suspensions as well as the tendency of red blood cells to aggregate.
